The reignited rivalry between Nigerian Afrobeat giants Burna Boy and Davido has kept the entertainment industry talking.
Davido renewed the debate in a recent interview by calling Burna Boy a “new cat” in Nigerian music.
“Everyone knows. I joined early. Wizkid and I were among the first young musicians to blow up, and it feels wonderful to watch new cats like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Mayorkun, a lot of fresh cats coming, killing it, Asake, who was on my record. Davido replied, “Yes, I think the future of Afrobeat is in good hands.”
Davido’s statement angered Burna Boy’s supporters, reigniting the industry controversy.
Music fans continue to argue about Davido and Burna Boy’s dominance, much like Lionel Messi and Cristian Ronaldo’s fans.
Some fans say Burna Boy has been famous since he released his debut album, “LIFE,” in 2013, whereas Davido’s followers say his 2012 album, “Omo Baba Olowo,” was a larger smash.
On Thursday, Rock Music Federation President Phil Roberts told DAILY POST that all Nigerian musicians had helped Afrobeats thrive.
Despite Nigerian Afrobeats becoming worldwide, everyone in the sector is doing business, thus the war for domination.
“Everyone wants career success. Nobody wants down.
“As you can see, all of them are making us proud outside Nigeria, but it’s a business. To stay on top, you must guarantee no one rises higher than you.
“So, it’s part of entertainment because if they don’t create that kind of discussion, I’m not sure they’ll trend. Everyone desires career success. Competition rules.
“Nothing there. They’re merely entertaining you since listening to solely their music wouldn’t be fun.
How did Davido popularize Afrobeat? All have contributed.
“They all exposed it.” African afrobeat. Who’s Africaner? We’re African, thus these are our genres. Even though they all came out worldwide, these beats have been there.
“Because when you are cooking a soup, it is not only one ingredient that makes the soup sweeter, it’s different ingredients,” he explained.
Simeon Sunday, a renowned Abuja media figure, said Davido’s Burna Boy statement was accurate.
He said Burna Boy was unknown when Davido released Omo Baba Olowo in 2012.
Sunday, aka Big Daddy of Abuja, believed Burna Boy became into music a year after Davido.
Sunday believes Burna Boy only made an impact in 2019 when he entered popular music.
Davido was right to call Burna a new cat. Davido’s 2012 Omo Baba Olowo album, featuring hits like Dami Duro, Back When, Ekuro, and others, broke him into the mainstream.
“Where was Burna?” He hadn’t reached the brook. Burna’s single “Like to Party” from his L. I. F. E album became widespread almost a year after Davido’s album. After LIFE, Burna struggled before his major break in 2019.
“Putting this into perspective, despite Burna outshining Davido now with his Stadium tours across the world, it wouldn’t be totally out of place if David refers to him as a new cat, just as 2Face, Dbanj and others could refer to David and Burna as New cats,” he said.
