According to a press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Monday, the search for British actor Julian Sands, who was reported missing in January after going hiking in the San Gabriel mountains northeast of Los Angeles, resumed on Saturday.
The release stated that officials “continued ongoing search efforts for missing hiker Julian Sands in the Mount Baldy wilderness.” Unfortunately, we were unable to locate Mr. Sands.”
Over eighty search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff participated in the search, which was supported by two helicopters and drone personnel as volunteers sought in “remote areas across Mount Baldy and conducted aerial search and assessment efforts,” per officials.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department tweeted videos of the helicopters and air support involved in the search.
Officials reported on Monday that “despite recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions” and that multiple search areas contain precipitous terrain covered in “10 feet or more of ice and snow.”
The ongoing search for Sands has been complicated by severe weather conditions.
Gloria Huerta, a department spokesperson, told CNN in January that severe weather and an avalanche threat forced officials to suspend their search efforts.
Officials previously stated that mobile phone pings from January 15 lead them to believe that Sands, a longstanding resident of the Los Angeles area, disappeared near Mt. Baldy.
Since then, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department has conducted eight specific ground and air searches for Sands, and volunteers have logged over 500 hours of search time.
The 65-year-old actor is best known for his roles in the television series “24” and the motion pictures “A Room with a View” and “Arachnophobia.” Among his other works are the films “The Killing Fields” and “Leaving Las Vegas” as well as the television series “Smallville.”
